Description du cours :

Through a series of discussions and collective research, this course invites students to expand their typographic perspective beyond the Latin script and think outside of the “box of typical design habits” found in a French and Latin context, both theoretically and in practice. The course encourages students to reconsider their design assumptions and to approach other scripts with curiosity, respect, and adaptability so to develop a “kindness” towards writing systems we may not be familiar with. Emphasis is placed on cultural sensitivity, experimentation, and teamwork.

Objectifs pédagogiques :

Develop awareness and respect for writing systems and their graphic/structural specificities.
Understand the post-colonial contexts that can carry typography and letterforms in specific writing systems.
Work collaboratively: learn to delegate, organize, and to sometimes lead within a design team.
Explore the visual and technical challenges of designing across multiple writing systems.
Engage in critical reflection about the designer’s role in a global and multilingual context.
