Description Project :
HEAR Collaboration with Hartmann Manufacture in Munster
The Textile Design department at Haute école des arts du Rhin, will engage in a collaborative project with Hartmann Manufacture, located in Munster. Founded in 1792 by André Hartmann, this historic family-owned enterprise has played a significant role in the region’s textile heritage. Initially renowned for its expertise in Indian-style textile printing, the company expanded its activities to include spinning and weaving operations. Today, rotary printing remains the sole technique still in use at the factory.

In rotary screen printing, the design to be printed is engraved or etched directly onto the surface of a thin nickel or steel mesh cylinder. This cylindrical screen continually rotates as the substrate passes underneath it. Ink is flooded onto the inside of the rotating screen. Each colour has one cylinder.

Objectifs pédagogiques :
As part of the project, students will conduct site visits to the Hartmann factory, explore its historical archives, and consult additional archival materials housed at the Munster town hall. Drawing inspiration from these historical sources, each student will develop a contemporary print design for table linen, grounded in a selected theme or subject identified during their research. The project will culminate in a final presentation, during which a jury will evaluate the submitted designs. One design will be selected for production, provided the jury determines it effectively embodies the identity and values of the Hartmann Manufacture.
