Description du cours :
The Importance of Textile Archives in Creative and Historical Contexts
Archives play a vital role in preserving the evidence of past actions, documenting history, and safeguarding cultural heritage. They serve not only individuals and organisations but also society as a whole by promoting accountability, transparency, and informed decision-making.

By providing access to unique historical records, archives foster a collective memory and shared identity. They protect the rights of individuals and communities, offer insight into traditions and cultural practices, and ensure that the experiences of the past continue to inform our present and future. In essence, archives are the memory of communities and nations—they capture and preserve the decisions, opinions, and actions that shape our world. Understanding the past through archives is essential to understanding the present.

Objectifs pédagogiques :
In this project, you will engage with the concept of archiving on a personal and creative level. You
will develop a sample that reflects your own process, where you choose the technique, material,
and purpose of the sample. This creation becomes a piece of your personal history—your own
textile archive. The project involves three main components:
– Research: Investigating historical and contemporary textile practices.
– Technique Development: Exploring and experimenting with textile methods.
– Fibre Knowledge: Understanding the properties and potentials of different materials.
Through this creative process, you will reflect on how archives are not only repositories of the past but also active tools in shaping identity, creativity, and innovation. Your sample is more than a textile—it is a tangible record of your learning, your choices, and your evolving perspective as a maker.

Create textile samples for a specific discipline in Design.
Take in consideration which fibres are required for your subject.

Technique:
Weaving | knitting | printing | felting | other
